Social media for (interior) architects - the power of online visibility

Social media: a curse or a blessing? We interviewed several (interior) architects from Belgium and abroad to explore the impact of social media on their careers.

Nicolas Schuybroek (architect):
“How do you present a residential project that is inaccessible to outsiders? Thanks to social media, you have complete control over how you realise this. It is not just about the photography, but also the perception of materials and atmosphere. No one imposes rules on what to share or when. It’s your vision, your aesthetic, your story. In other words: you create your own world and share it with the outside world. This freedom has helped me a great deal in building my portfolio over recent years.”

Wouter Tousseyn (interior architect):
“By posting about a project in Tennessee, Instagram helped me gain exposure in the US, leading to opportunities in New York and LA. When I subsequently posted about the LA project, I was amazed to receive 2 million views. It was a fantastic boost! So Instagram is a great platform for me, also to expand my network.”

Hannes Peer (architect):
In the beginning, I approached Instagram less as a showcase of projects and more as an archive of ideas, concepts, and references. For me, it was a space to share research, spark dialogue and discover affinities. That way of using the platform proved to be very powerful: before my projects gained visibility, it was my research that first caught the attention of leading voices in the editorial world. Over time, Instagram evolved into much more than a portfolio; it became a cultural platform where I could build a narrative around my work, connect with a global audience and foster meaningful exchanges with clients, collaborators, and fellow creatives. For me, social media has never been only about visibility—it’s been about dialogue, discovery and creating a shared space where design can resonate on many different levels.
