Villa CN by Van Damme-Vandeputte architects

Van Damme-Vandeputte architects designed Villa CN in Nieuwpoort. Nestled in the heart of the historic Simli district, at the intersection of two streets and just a stone’s throw from the sea, this house draws inspiration and influences from different directions. Villa CN reflects the authentic architecture and nostalgic charm of the neighbourhood. Its stately exterior contrasts with a robust yet warm interior. The villa offers luxurious living comfort alongside extensive wellness facilities. Subtle historical allusions enrich the design, while the shared passion for art between client and architects is evident throughout. All these elements come together in an atmosphere of warmth and a sense of security – a hallmark of the Van Damme-Vandeputte portfolio.

In Nieuwpoort’s historic Simli district, a worn-out coastal house on a compact plot made way for a contemporary villa complete with swimming pool. The architecture retains a strong link to the coastal charm and captures the architectural character of the neighbourhood. After all, for the Van Damme-Vandeputte duo, good architecture cannot exist without context. In addition to residential projects, the Belgian architectural firm also focuses on commercial architecture and the restoration of historic buildings. The same sense of stately monumentality is present in Villa CN. The block-shaped chimney not only brings balance to the design but also subtly references functional mid-century bungalows. It is a nod to the well-known and much-appreciated work of Peter Callebout further down the neighbourhood. The architect drew inspiration from the distinctive regional coastal architecture, typically painted white and built in timber. All these elements are brought together in a contemporary design language that blends timeless elegance with luxurious comfort.

An art collection included in the design
The villa’s elegant entrance sets the tone for the architectural journey that awaits both residents and visitors. A unique vintage door handle from the 1970s – sourced by architect Benoit from a design dealer in London – hints not only at the interior’s warm and robust character, but also at the villa’s distinctive collection of art and design. This private collection was considered during the design phase and helped shape both the architecture and the layout and finishes of the interior. For Van Damme-Vandeputte, curating art is more than a guiding principle or growing ambition; it’s a defining influence that informs the sculptural approach present in every project.

Once inside, leather wall coverings, sturdy bronze taps, alabaster light fixtures, and bleached warm walnut parquet floors reflect how the architectural duo tailors each project to the client’s desires. This approach not only challenges the architects to step outside their comfort zone with every project, but also ensures that each home is a personal and appropriate response to the residents’ needs, wishes, and lifestyle. At the client’s request, the house was topped with a thatched roof. Benoit and Hannes have since had the opportunity to realise projects all along the Belgian coast, witnessing the quiet resurgence of the thatched roof as a statement of understated, charming luxury.

A succession of design icons

Villa CN is a celebration of art and design icons, from the monumental dining and living area to the open, sculptural kitchen, wellness spaces, and office zones. Highlights include lighting for Ozone and door handles for Vervloet, both designed by Glenn Sestig, a dining and coffee table by Van Rossum, a JOV carpet in the living room, and furniture by Maxalto, Piet Boon, and Destroyers/Builders. Great care was taken to achieve high-quality customisation. A prime example is the kitchen, where timber and veined marble are combined with elegance, as well as the bespoke office furniture crafted from wood, bronze, and leather. The precise stitching and distinctive cognac hue call to mind the iconic leatherwork of Hermès. Flanked by paintings by Yvan Theys, this unique piece of furniture instantly transforms the room into a state-of-the-art office. The TV room also deserves mention, featuring a cigar cabinet lined with Spanish cedar.

The common thread throughout Van Damme-Vandeputte’s portfolio is clear: alongside refined, monumental architecture, the duo consistently creates a luxurious atmosphere of warmth and homeliness – always aiming for the right mise-en-scène. Not through rigid geometry, but through a warm and intuitive approach. “For the first time in our lives, we can sleep through the night again in this place,” said the residents of Villa CN.
