Blog | La Congiunta – Peter Märkli: concrete art container in the middle of the Swiss vineyards.

La Congiunta lives up to its name: to blend architecture and art in one place. The reinforced concrete museum is one of Swiss architect Peter Märkli's best-known creations. It was designed specifically for the reliefs and sculptures of artist Hans Josephsohn and completed in 1992. The elongated structure fits perfectly in the narrow valley of Giornico, a small village and open-air museum with numerous historical monuments in southern Switzerland. La Congiunta's three exhibition spaces are naturally lit with daylight from above. Would you like to visit this quiet place? Then pick up the key at the osteria nearby! The museum is open all year round.

Other interesting facts:
• Peter Märkli is considered a renowned architect of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Another well-known building designed by him is the visitor center on the Novartis Campus in Basel (2006).
• Driven by his fascination with classicist order and the search for proper proportions in architecture, Märkli developed his own system of proportions applicable at any scale.
• Hans Josephsohn is one of Märkli's favourite artists and a partner in multiple collaborations.
